What is a Project Manager?

This is a question we get asked all the time. You’ll notice on our job board we often have a few positions available entitled “Project Manager”. And seeing as though we’re frequently seeking to place Project Managers, a lot of people want to make sure they know what it is before they apply.

Not only do we want to explain what a Project Manager is, but we want to share with you what it takes to be a successful Project Manager in Miami, and other parts of South Florida.

To literally define the term for you, Project Management Institute's (PMI)® A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide), 5th Edition, “Project Management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements.” Now, to someone who isn’t familiar with the position, this might seem like a vague description. So let us break it down a little more than that.

Planning and Executing Projects—Once a client has an idea of what they want, it’s the Project Manager’s job to come up with a work plan to turn that idea into reality.  

Budgeting—A Project manager has to make sure that their work plan is within the budget that the client is able to spend. Everything from paying the workers to ordering the supplies has to be within their budget.

Managing a team—Nothing is more important than a team that works together and gets tasks complete in a timely manner. As a Project Manager, you’re the one responsible for making the team work smoothly.

There is still a lot more that goes into being a Project Manager, however this is a solid idea of their workload.
